First Nationwide Congress of Indonesian Women

VIVAnews – 80 years ago today, on 22 December 1928, the first nationwide congress of Indonesian Women was opened in Yogyakarta.

Following the success of Indonesian Youth Congress on 28 October 1928, leaders of several women associations in Indonesia (then the Netherlands Indies) decided to hold a nationwide meeting of their own. The congress took place in Yogyakarta from 22 to 25 December 1928. No less than 30 women organizations throughout Java and Sumatra attended the meeting.

The congress was chaired by Soejatin of Poetri Indonesia, Nyi Hajar Dewantara of Taman Siswa and Soekonto of Wanito Tomo. They discussed several key issues on Indonesian women including health, education and marriage.

One of the results of the congress was the founding of the Association of Women Organizations (Perikatan Perkumpulan Perempuan Indonesia).

To commemorate the first congress of Indonesian women, the government declares the opening day of the congress, 22 December, as Indonesian Mother’s Day.
