April 21 - May 1: Allegory of Docile Bodies

VIVAnews - Haris Purnomo, a former student of Asri Visual Art College, Yogyakarta, was one of the visual art activists trough PIPA community in 1977 who was banished by censorship in his second exhibition. Despite the fame he got by working together with the PIPA community, Haris Purnomo had been working as an advertising designer for a very long period. He even nearly left the realm of visual art.

Less than five years of his coming back to the visual art atmosphere, his name was famous not only in the national scene, but also accepted in the international market, especially in China and the US. The title of the exhibition, "Allegory of Docile Bodies", which is curated by Hendro Wiyanto stresses on an imagery theme in the works which are dominated by picture of tattooed soldier babies which are depicted in various designs. Mostly the tattooed babies are painted in a single panel or trytich (three panels) in a single row with a complicated repetitions of design.

Haris Purnomo is presenting three works which are made of one installation work, one painting made of two panels (dyptich) and one painting made of three panels (trytich). His present works will be soon exhibited in Seattle, United States, for his next solo exhibition.
