Terrorists and Separatists Threaten Elections

VIVAnews - The Indonesian Military (TNI) identified several threats than can disrupt the General Election execution. The security threats before the election varies from general crimes up to terrorism.

"The predicted-security threats potential that can inflict the Legislative and Presidential elections includes terrorism, horizontal conflict, sabotage, radicalism, mass riot, and separatism," said the Commander of the Indonesian Military, General Djoko Santoso, during a working meeting between the Indonesian Military, Defence Minister Juwono Sudarsono, and the Commission on Foreign Affairs and Defence of the House of Representatives at the House of Representatives building in Jakarta on Monday Feb. 23.

Besides these threats, TNI also detected the rise of crime before the General Elections. "It is predicted that there will be a rise in crime rate nationally that can disrupt the 2009 General Elections," said Santoso.

Nonetheless, Gen. Santoso guaranteed that the 2009 General Elections will be safe and controlled across the nation. TNI had ensured that security measures will be taken to avoid any disturbance during the elections.

"Everything is safe, starting from Aceh until other regions. It's in civic order status," said the general at a press conference last January
