VIVAnews - Head of Indonesian Military Information Center Rear Admiral Sagom Tamboen said that the statement claiming that the Indonesian Military will not be neutral in the 2009 Elections is provocative and political. In fact, a report saying that the Indonesian Military (TNI) is not neutral constitutes deceit.
"Any report that does not include facts should not be publicized. Suspicion holding no evidence and verification will only trigger restlessness and injure the nation," Tamboen told VIVAnews on Wednesday, Dec 24.
A statement, uttered by a leader of a national party, implicating that the Indonesian Military will not be neutral in the 2009 Elections is a confusing and premature political standpoint.
It is confusing because the Indonesian Military is still in the process of becoming a neutral party with regard to national interests despite the fact that every member of the Indonesian Military must lose one of his or her most fundamental rights as a citizen.
Neither members of the Indonesian Military nor Indonesian Military civil servants were allowed to such political activity such as campaigns.
"The Indonesian Military civil servants, although they have the right to vote, could not be involved in any campaign or join in the [elections monitoring] committee," said Tamboen.
The claim that the Indonesian military would not be neutral is premature because a commitment can only be evaluated after it is implemented. The 2009 legislative elections and presidential elections have yet to take place. Therefore, it is illogical to doubt the Indonesian Military's commitment.
"Hasn't the Indonesian Military's commitment over the regional elections been evidence of commitment?" said Tamboen.
According to Tamboen, it is time for all parties to stop involving the Indonesian Military in politics as TNI has committed to retract from political activities.
"It's the will of the Indonesian Military to become neutral in the 2009 Elections, and anyone who violate the rules will be sanctioned," said Tamboen.
