Achmad Mubarok

Politics is Like a Game

VIVAnews - Politics is not just a science, but also a game and an art.

This curious definition caught the attention of Achmad Mubarok. This is why Mubarok, who was one of the leaders of the Democratic Party, maintained that in politics you have to be rational, compete fairly, and elegant, to see as well as to feel.

Mubarok was the co-founder of the Democratic Party. The newcomer party that helped Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono won the presidential seat in the 2004 elections.

Politics, he said, is a path to power. Therefore, a politician should imitate God's power. God is indeed Almighty, but He is also the most Beneficent, Merciful and Just. “It's okay if politicians hold power. However, they have to use such power to spread compassion among the people in a fair manner,” said Mubarok.

Mubarok, the Vice Chairman of the Democratic Party’s Central Leadership Council, also has another view regarding politics. Politics is such a huge power. It's like a wild horse. Therefore, politics should not be absolutely opened. According to Mubarok, the horse must wear eyes protector to control its power. “It's to prevent them from going wild.”

Most interestingly, according to Mubarok, the Betawi people called the coachman sais. In Arabic, it is another form of the word siyasah which means politics.

Achmad Mubarok was born in Purwokerto, on 15 December 1945. Although he holds a strategic position in the Democratic Party's Central Leadership Council, the man who always looks ‘cool’ is more like an academician.

Mubarok studies Sufism and Psychology. He is the world's first professor in Islamic Psychology. Mubarok currently works as lecturer, consultant, and family counselor.

For five consecutive years, he became the Head of the Grand Jury of the National Most-Ideal Family Competition. His cross-cultural intercourses help him to become a person of rich experience and broad connections.

According to him, the visitors to his web has reached almost two hundred thousand people. In his site, you could read his views on various issues. You could also consult your problem with him in this blog.

Today, Mubarok is a lecturer at the Graduate School of the University of Indonesia and has written more than fifty books.

In international context, the man who had served as the member of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) was active in several international organizations. These include the International Institute of Islamic Thought, Islamic Millennium Forum, and International Association of Moslem Psychologist.

In 2006, along with four other Indonesians, Mubarok was elected Ambassador for Peace by an institution under the United Nations: Universal Peace Federation Interreligious and International Federation of World Peace.

The title of his inaugural address as the Emeritus Professor of Islamic Psychology was ‘the Prevention of Terrorism with Islamic Indigenous Psychology Approach’. That is why the Voice of America who interviewed him later mentioned him as the expert in terrorism psychology.

In speaking about Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Jusuf Kalla, Mubarok said that Yudhoyono was soft and cautious in managing the government. Such approach has a rather slow impact.

Yudhoyono's style, according to him, differed from Jusuf Kalla who possesses a business background. Kalla, said Mubarok, is a fast decision maker. “You could say that he's willing to pay in the spot whether or not the commodity is already there,” he said.

During the first two years of their administration, said Mubarok, Yudhoyono-Kalla failed to achieve synergy. However, during their fourth year, Yudhoyono has become more decisive and skillful, while Kalla has begun to restrain himself.

Such changes helped the two leaders to function more synergic in managing their soft power politics. This is why Mubarok would agree that the two should remain as running mates during the 2009 elections. “Nevertheless, it will all depend on the real political map after the legislative elections,” said Mubarok.
