70% Respondents Prefer Male President

VIVAnews - Voters in Indonesia are apparently gender-biased. A survey conducted by the Institute for Social and Economic Research, Education and Information (LP3ES) showed that the majority of respondents prefer a male president.

The question posed in a survey conducted from 1 to 10 December 2008 was as follows: "Based on gender, which do you prefer to be elected as Indonesia's next President?" The survey showed that 70.9 percent out of 2,485 respondents chose 'male'.

Only 10.4 percent support the election of a female president, while 18.6 percent feel gender is not an issue.

Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is preferred as the top presidential candidate with 36.2 percent of votes while Megawati Soekarno Putri, the only female candidate, is in second position with 17.6 percent.

As for vice presidential candidate, 66.7 percent of respondents prefer a male vice president. Only 8.1 percent of respondents prefers a female vice president and 25.2 percent said it does not make a difference. 

Respondents were at least 17 years of age, located in 125 villages across 33 provinces. The respondents were chosen randomly and proportionally from each province. Face-to-face interviews were carried out with a margin of error of less than two percent . Accuracy rate is 95 percent.
