VIVAnews - The Foreign Affairs Department stated that it is difficult to know the last condition of the terrorism suspect Hambali. The Indonesian government also said that they are having difficulties to give protection and legal aid since Hambali is not listed as an Indonesian citizen.
The Director for Indonesian Citizen Protection and Business Entities Teguh Wardoyo said that the passport which was held by Hambali during his arrest in Thailand in 2003 was written with his name and had his picture on it, but the passport was not issued by the Indonesian government.
"The material evidence is that he's holding a Spanish passport, therefore the country that has the right to protect him is Spain," he said in a media workshop on international issues in Jakarta on Wednesday, March 25.
Wardoyo said that that fact made the process even more difficult. "We can't claim that he's Indonesian," he added.
Wardoyo said that the US government had stated that there are fourteen high prisoners who are categorised as highly dangerous, i.e. a Saudi Arabia citizen, Yemen citizen, two Malaysian, and one Indonesian which is Hambali.
"But I think it [Hambali's Indonesian status] was because he's born in West Java," he said. He also stated that Hambali did not admit that he is Indonesian.
A number of media have previously reported that the Indonesian government does not want Hambali back because the risk of increasing the terror. Hambali's return from Guantanamo will also make him pictured as a "hero".
Yet, the accusation was denied by the Head for Investigator and Crime Division of the Indonesian Police Commissioner General Susno Duadji. He stated that the Indonesian government will continue the investigation on Hambali.
The Guantanamo prison closing was authorised by Obama on Thursday, January 22. Besides closing down the prison, the US president also instructed to stop the military training for handling the terrorists. The closing rose speculations on whether Hambali will go back to Indonesia or not to face the legal process.
