Six Judges' Integrity May Be Questioned

VIVAnews - The Supreme Court appointed nine judges to handle cases in the Anti-Corruption Court. Six of the nine judges have been known for releasing corruption defendants.

"The judges appointed by the Supreme Court must be questioned based on their integrity and commitment to eradicate corruption," said an official from the Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW)'s working commission Emerson Yuntho in his statement on Monday, April 13.

Based on the decree from the Supreme Court's head No. 041/KMA/SK/III/2009, the Court appointed nine judges who will process cases in the Anti-Corruption Court, namely Panunsunan Harahap, Nani Indrawati, Reno Listowo, Jupriadi, Subahran, Cok Suamba, Sarifudin Umar, Herdi Agustin, and FX Jiwo Santoso.

They will replace the former Anti-Corruption Court judges, namely Gusrizal (promoted for the chief of Bogor District Court), Kresna Menon (chief of Bandung District Court ), Sutiono (deputy chief of Sumedang District Court), Teguh Haryanto (deputy chief of Tulungagung District Court), Moefri (deputy chief of Sampit District Court), Martini Mardja I (deputy chief of Kayu Agung District Court).

ICW recorded there were six judges who had released corruption defendants, namely Panusunan Harahap, Reno Listowo, FX Jiwo Santoso, Subachran, Jupriadi, dan Syafruddin Umar.

Harahap and Listowo had released the defendants of the TVRI corruption case worth Rp 5.2 billion (US$457,543). The defendants in this case were the former director of TVRI Sumita Tobing. Judge FX Jiwo Santoso gave an acquittal verdict to the defendants in the corruption case of the Yogyakarta Tirtayani Utama Cooperation. Judge Subachran when running the Blora District Court office had acquitted four officials of Blora Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) from a corruption case of 2003 regional budget for pension fund worth Rp 1.4 billion (US$123,185).

Other than that, Judge Jupriyadi when working at the Muara Bulian Jambi District Court had released six defendants in the Manpower and Transmigration Agency's corruption case and state land sale in Jambi. Judge Syafruddin Umar (when running as the chief and a member of the court panel) even set free 36 defendants of corruption case at the Makassar District Court.
