Islamic Parties’ Electoral Strength

VIVAnews - Indonesian Survey Agency (LSI) conducted a nationwide survey from 8 to 20 September 2008. With a total sample of 1,239 Muslim respondents, the survey has an accuracy level of 95 percent. Respondents for this survey are Indonesian citizens who are eligible to vote, which means that all respondents are at least 17 years old, or are already married at the time of the survey. The respondents were interviewed using the Multistage Random Sampling Method and takes into account the population proportion of provinces, cities and village, and gender.

The majority of Muslim respondents believed that the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) is the most Islamic party (20 percent), followed by the People’s Awakening Party (PKB) at 18 percent, and the United Development Party (PPP) at 13 percent.

However, the respondents deemed the secular parties as the parties that come up with better pro-welfare programs. This is shown by the fact that 15 percent of the respondents chose the Functional Group (Golkar) Party. Only 14 percent chose the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), 9 percent chose the Democratic Party, 6 percent chose PKS, 2.5 percent chose the PKB, and 2 percent chose the PPP.

Islamic parties’ electoral sentiment from 2005 to 2008 tends to be stable (16 percent in 2005 and 17 percent in 2008), while that of non-Islamic parties tend to rise (52 percent in 2005 and 60 percent in 2008).

Being labeled Islamic has proven to be ineffective in securing votes, since the PKS, which possessed the strongest Islamic label (19 percent), only acquired 6 percent of votes. While Golkar Party, which possessed an Islamic label of 12 percent, obtained 19 percent of votes.
