VIVAnews - Five out of seven defendants of terrorist case who were captured in Palembang, South Sulawesi, may be sentenced to death. Two other defendants were only charged under an article with maximum possible sentence of 15 years of imprisonment.
Previously, three other suspects have been brought to court, all with the possibility of facing the death sentence if proven guilty. As a result, of 10 defendants who are brought to court, eight defendants are possibly facing death sentence.
"The defendants have committed inter-related crimes. Everything is attached in the charge," said prosecutor Totok Bambang on Tuesday, Jan 20.
The five defendants include Abdurrahman aka Musa aka Taib aka Ivan and Ki Agus Muhammad Ton, Sugiyarto aka Sugicheng aka Raja, Agustiawarman aka Abu Taskid and Heri Purwanto aka Abu Hurairoh.
As for Sugiyarto, Agustiawarman and Heri Purwanto, they were charged under article 15 juncto article 7 of Law on Anti-terrorism. In addition, Abdurrahman and Ki Agus Muhammad was charged under article 15 juncto article 6.
Meanwhile, the charges brought against Anis Sugandi aka Abdullah Hussair and Sukarso Abdullah aka Abdurrahman could have rendered a maximum of 15 years of imprisonment. Both were only charged under article 13 of Law on Anti-terrorism.
Prosecution claimed that all defendants were either attempting or assisting acts of terrorism by deliberately committing acts of violence and possible acts of violence. "As a result, causing terror or fear to the public," said Bambang.
Two other defendants were only charged with maximum of 15 years of imprisonment because, "[they] assisted or facilitated those perpetrators of terrorist acts on purpose by providing a hideout. They committed indirect crime," said Bambang.
During the first trial, three defendants were charged under articles with maximum sentence of death penalty. They were Muhammad Hasan aka Fajar Taslim, Ali Mashudi aka Zuber and Wahyudi aka Yudi. The three suspects were charged under article 15 juncto article 6.
