VIVAnews - 156 CEOs across the globe urged governments to implement the obligation of protecting Human Rights. It is a part of 60 years commemoration of the Declaration of Human Rights.
The declaration that the CEOs agreed upon was organized by the UN Global Compact and had been printed on the Financial Times. The declaration was the commitment of the business community in supporting Human Rights. This was also a sign that the business community has been an inseparable part in the attempt to better Human Rights.
The declaration illustrated the rising consciousness of the business community in respecting and putting Human Rights into its main schedule, including in Indonesia.
The top world companies include Standard Chartered, Unilever, Coca Cola, Carrefour, Levi Strauss, Deutsche Bank AG, Credit Suisse, Cadbury, Bayer AG, Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Nestle S.A., Ricoh Company Ltd., Volvo Group, the Coca Cola Company & Co, Fuji Xerox Ltd., Rio Tinto and Japan Airlines Corporation.
Indonesia was represented by Wiloto Group CEO of Asia Pacific, Christovita Wiloto. "A Universal Declaration must be encouraged in business activity because it will affect companies' reputation and credibility," said Wiloto.
According to Wiloto, the business community should not solely aim at profits. It should also have ethics, afford efforts to alleviate poverty and contribute in improving people to live more decently. In addition, 900 million people are currently suffering from famine and poverty.
The Indonesian people should be wiser in applying Human Rights concepts mainly those concerning with businesses and nation's competing power. For instance, with regard to rights concerning health, safety, product assurance, economic protection, compensation.
So far, numerous Human Rights violations have been committed in business communities. The cases are involved with infringement of consumers' trust, circulation of false or low-quality products and malpractices.
