Hambali to Be Investigated

VIVAnews - The Obama administration will shut down the Guantanamo prison. Seveal prisoners will be returned to their countries including an alleged Indonesian terrorist, Hambali.

According to an anonymous VIVAnews source, two members of police's antiterror squad Detachment 88, Chief Commissioner Syafei and Chief Commissioner Tito Karnavian had visited the prison two weeks ago to have a look at Hambali. However, Chief of Crime and Investigation Division at the Indonesian Police HQs Commissioner General Susno Duadji denied the information.

"No official invitation has been sent," said Duadji on Friday, March 6.

Duadji also denied the information that Indonesia refuses Hambali. "We must investigate him in the first place otherwise. We will see if there is a connection with the incidents occurred [in Indonesia]," said Duadji.

According to Duadji, the Indonesian government will still probe into Hambali. "We hunted him in the past. As a consequence, he must still be investigated," he said.

He also negated the information that two police officials of the Detachment 88--Deputy Detachment 88 Chief Commissioner Syafei and Chief Commissioner Tito Karnavian--left for the United States to check on Hambali.

"Hambali is still in Guantanamo, which is far away. We are not yet invited. Going to the United States without being invited can be called a recreation," said Duadji. However, he was not convinced if interrogating Hambali also means taking him home to Indonesia. "Inquiry [processes] can take place anywhere," he said.

Chief of Indonesian Police also denied that police had investigated Hambali.

As a local daily Jakarta Globe and other international media reported, the Indonesian government was against the return of Hambali because it is worried that the terror risk will escalate.

Hambali was arrested in Thailand due to a suspicion that he was one of the leaders of Al-Qaeda. It was also reported that Hambali was the leader of the Jemaah Islamiyah.
