Indonesia Withdrew from United Nations

VIVAnews – 43 years ago today, on 7 January 1965, the Indonesian government withdrew from the United Nations.

Indonesia joined the United Nations (UN) on 28 September 1950. During its period of membership, Indonesia was active in UN missions, including participating in sending its peacekeeping force to many parts of the world.

In late 1965, a conflict arose between Indonesia and the UN. Indonesia rejected the Security Council’s plan to give one of its non-permanent seats to Malaysia, which at the time was at war with Indonesia.

On 31 December 1964, Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador L.N. Palar conveyed to the UN Secretary General U Thant the contents of President Soekarno’s statement that Indonesia would withdraw from the UN if Malaysia was to be given a seat in the Security Council.

Unfortunately, Indonesia’s request to cancel the appointment of Malaysia was overruled by the Security Council, thus on 7 January 1965 Indonesia withdrew itself from the UN. The decision was formalized by a letter of 20 January 1965, in which Indonesia formally announced its decision to withdraw from the United Nations.

However, after Soeharto took over the Indonesian government in 1966, by a telegram dated 19 September 1966, Indonesia announced its decision “to resume full cooperation with the United Nations and to resume participation in its activities.” On 28 September 1966, the General Assembly took note of the decision and its Chairman offered Indonesia a seat in the Assembly.
