Death of Prince Diponegoro

VIVAnews – 153 years ago today, on 8 January 1855, Prince Diponegoro, an Indonesian National Hero, passed away.

Pangeran (Prince) Diponegoro was born in Yogyakarta on 11 November 1785. He was the eldest son of Sultan Hamengkubuwono III, the ruler of Yogyakarta from 1810 to 1814. Despite being of noble blood, Diponegoro did not distance himself from his people.

Diponegoro was passed over for the succession to the throne in favor of his younger half brother who was supported by the Dutch. Being a devout Muslim, Diponegoro was alarmed by the relaxing of religious observance at his half brother's court, as well as by the court's pro-Dutch policy. When his half brother died, leaving only an infant son as heir, Diponegoro was again passed over, though he believed he had been promised the right to succeed his half brother.

His opposition to the Dutch colonialism became stronger after they re-imposed land-tax to his people. He became even more enraged when the Dutch denied him the right to Sultan’s succession and constructed a road through his property. After some contemplation, Diponegoro became convinced that the time had come for him and his people to wage a holy war against the Dutch.

The rebellion turned out to be a massive mutiny. Tens of thousands of Javanese nobles and peasants rallied together under the banner of the courageous prince. The Dutch suffered one defeat after another. Each year, the Dutch lost one third of their army. The Diponegoro war suddenly became the most expensive and one of the largest wars ever fought by the Dutch in the Netherlands Indies.

On 26 March 1830, the Dutch invited Prince Diponegoro to negotiate a truce. Despite the flag of truce, the prince was taken prisoner and exiled to Manado, and later Makassar. He died while still on custody on 8 January 1855.

Today Prince Diponegoro is a National Hero in Indonesia, and the Central Java Military Region is named after him.
