VIVAnews - A woman in Surabaya, East Java, died of after showing symptoms that resembled those of a bird flu, said a doctor at Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya, on Wednesday, Jan 28. The 21-year-old woman passed away on Saturday, Jan. 24, in the hospital.

"She had breathing difficulties, high fever and lost consciousness," said Palilingan as quoted from Channel News Asia on Wednesday, Jan 28.

He said the presence of the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus would have to be confirmed after testing tissue samples. Two positive results are needed before the authorities can confirm that it was a human bird flu infection.

A health ministry spokesperson said the ministry had sent experts to check on the condition of poultry in the woman's village in Tulungagung district, East Java. Indonesia is the country worst-hit by avian influenza with 115 deaths officially recorded since 2003.

Meanwhile, in 2009, five have died of bird flu in China. The fifth death was reported on Monday, Jan. 26. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), death tolls for bird flu reached around 250 across the globe since 2003. Experts fear that the virus, which is usually spread directly from birds to humans, could mutate into a form easily transmissible between people, sparking a global pandemic.
