Indonesia's Protectionism Leads in ASEAN
VIVAnews - World Bank economist, Sjamsu Rahardja, considers Indonesia as the leading country compared to other countries in ASEAN in domestic product protection policy implementation.
"Indonesia is still ahead of other countries in ASEAN," said Rahardja, a world trade specialist economist to VIVAnews in Jakarta on Tuesday, Feb. 24.
According to him, after the global economic crisis, many countries tend to create protection for domestic products. It is done in various ways in many countries in the world, like United States, European Union, Brazil, India and China.
In ASEAN, Rahardja said that the countries have not made aggressive actions for their domestic product protection. "The country that seems ahead is Indonesia," he said.
He said that Indonesia has issued the Indonesia Trade Ministerial Regulation No.44/M-DAG/PER/10/2008 on Certain Product Import Regulation. This regulation is one of the limitation or effort to limit the imported product going to Indonesia.
In the regulation, there are five commodities which are watched closely, i.e. food and beverages, footwear, electronics, textile and textile product (TPT), and toys. Every product is a readily imported product or HS coded.
