VIVAnews – Urip Tri Gunawan was arrested by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on 2 March 2008 in a house linked to his former suspect, Sjamsul Nursalim.
At the time, Nursalim, former owner of the now defunct Bank Dagang Nasional Indonesia (BDNI), was implicated in the embezzlement of Rp 28.4 billion (approx. US$2.5 billion) in Bank Indonesia Liquidity Assistance (BLBI) funds.
The arrest was widely reported by the media since the incident happened barely two days after the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) announced to the media that the investigation into Sjamsul Nursalim case, headed by Gunawan, had been dropped since there was no evidence of corruption.
According to the KPK, Gunawan was suspected of conveying information about his office plans to summon Nursalim as well as the status of the investigation progress to Artalyta, a trusted colleague of Nursalim.
The woman, who was also taken into custody by the KPK, in turn gave US$660,000 to the former lead prosecutor of Amrozi during the 2002 Bali Bombings trial as a compensation for his information.
Later that year, on 4 September 2008, Gunawan was sentenced to 20 years in prison. The Corruption Court, presided by Judge Teguh Haryanto, found him guilty of receiving US$660,000 bribe from Artalyta. In addition, Gunawan was also fined Rp. 500 million (approx. US$50,000) by the court.
The bribery case also implicated other senior officials in the Attorney General’s Office. Three high-ranking officials in the AGO, namely Kemas Yahya Rahman, former deputy attorney general for special crimes, Muhammad Salim, former director of special criminal investigations, and Untung Udji Santoso, former deputy attorney general for state administrative affairs, were dismissed from their respective positions.
