ILO Should Reform System

VIVAnews - The Indonesian government requested that the International Labour Organization (ILO) reforms its system.

"It is time for ILO to reform the system which is related to the contribution and roles of the ILO members especially in emerging countries," said Manpower and Transmigration Minister Erman Suparno at the Department of Manpower and Transmigration's office in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 22.

The minister explained that ILO's role is still insignificant in terms of the betterment of migrant workers' welfare. "ILO must be able to be updated with the economic, social, cultural, and political development of its member countries," he said.

The said system reform includes ILO's contribution in globally monitoring the workers' competency as well as improving workers' welfare. "There should be no discrimination against emerging and developed countries concerning especially with migrant workers," Suparno said.

Suparno said that ILO should pay full attention to the improvement in workers welfare and safety (K3). One of the issues is concerned with the migrant workers' minimum fee rate standard.

He stressed that there must be equality in both the source and destination countries. "ILO also should discuss the behaviours of countries which employ migrant workers. [ILO] should not remain silent if a migrant worker is tortured," he said.
