RI to Remain Poor with 7% Growth

VIVAnews - Indonesia will not reach much progress if the economic growth is only seven percent. Indonesia must set an ambitious target to become a developed country.

"Indonesia is facing a future where poverty may become permanent if its economic growth is only seven percent," said an analyst from the US Jeffrey A Winters on Wednesday, April 22, in Jakarta.

According to him, Indonesia will remain a poor country by 2045 if the annual economic growth is only seven percent.

"I often ask the state leaders, when will exactly Indonesia become a developed country? 2050? 21st century? There has never been any answer," he said.

He said that if the Indonesia's economic growth reaches 10 percent within the next 20 years, then the nation's progress will be 21 times higher than today. Meanwhile, if it still applies the seven percent growth, it will only reach 6.2 times of progress in the next 20 years.

The problem is that an opinion suggesting that it is excellent if Indonesia reaches seven percent growth. From 1998 until 2007, the average economic growth was only 5.2 percent. "The mentality is only at the seven percent growth. The elites are proud of [the growth] can reach seven percent," he said.
