VIVAnews- The crisis occurring in the Golkar Party is due to the premature decision to break the coalition with the Democratic Party. The emotional decision ended up with rebellious acts committed by its 25 leaders of Regional Representatives Council (DPD).
“This emotional decision could cause Golkar to take the wrong steps in the presidential elections”, University of Indonesia’s Political Science Faculty professor, Maswadi Rauf told VIVAnews in Jakarta on Monday, April 28.
However, Rauf assumed that Golkar decision to quit the coalition has been legitimate. Therefore, the leaders’ act is considered as a rebellion. The leaders are also deemed violating the party’s codes.
If the 25 leaders insist on revising the meeting’s result, they cannot just go sending a letter easily because the decision lies in the hands of the Democratic Party.
In a letter sent to Golkar’s chairperson, Jusuf Kalla, the 25 leaders requested Kalla to put six names of Golkar’s cadres as the vice presidential candidates who will join the Democratic Party. This is to anticipate the possibility of Kalla’s failure in forming a coalition to run him in the 2009 presidential elections.
Rauf said the meeting’s decision last week was not only made by Jusuf Kalla and the party leaders, but also by all of party members.
“First, it was made because some people were offended. But then, it was set in the meeting. That is why it should be obeyed by the members”, Rauf said.
Rauf acknowledged that it is hard for Golkar to compete against the coalition of the Democratic Party, which nominates Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Until now Golkar does not have a partner while according to the quick counts from several survey agencies, Golkar only obtained 14 percent of votes. That means the winner of the 2004 elections will not be able to run on its own in the presidential elections.
“This is quite a big problem. This is a warning sign for Golkar. The party must find a partner to form a coalition”, he said.
