Soldiers Protest, Riot Breaks

VIVAnews - A demonstration involving hundreds of military personnel before the headquarters of Battalion 751 Sentani, Jayapura, Papua, ended with a riot on Wednesday, April 29.

The riot began as reporters snapped the demonstration using their cameras; for the demonstrators threw stones and iron at their own base on Jalan Kemiri Sentani. Realizing that there were photo-journalists on the scene, the soldiers objected and forbade the journalists to take more pictures.

Soon after, the soldiers and journalists were involved in chasing scenes.

Fearing for their lives, the journalists went into hideout at police stations and civilians' houses.

Unfortunately, a reporter named Anang was caught by the soldiers when he was eating at a restaurant. The soldiers then took away his camera. "I've told them that I have the right to cover the story," said the Sentana News reporter.

He was forced to let the soldiers take away his Nikon D40. "I haven't got my  camera back," he said.
