VIVAnews- In anticipating the spread of the swine flu, the Governor of West Sumatra, Gamawan Fauzi, has decided to temporarily close pig farms in several areas.
According to the report received by the provincial government, there are 500 pigs kept in some of the farms in Padang and Padang Pariaman Regency.
“For now, pig farms are being closed and routine examinations will be conducted together with the Mayor, Regent, the Health Department, the Animal Husbandry Department and some of the relevant institutions,” Fauzi said, on Friday, May 1.
According to Fauzi, the swine flu virus should not be underestimated because there have been victims in some of the countries worldwide. The provincial government has requested the relevant institutions to perform preventive actions such as tightening the security in the entrance of West Sumatra like in the Minangkabau International Airport (BIM) and the Teluk Bayur Harbor.
He said the local authorities hope nobody in West Sumatra will open a pig farm without any proper permit. “Especially for Mentawai, we will do coordination because of the high number of pig population in the regency”, he said.
Fauzi asked the Mayors and the Regents to close pig farms in their own areas as a preventive action. So far, to anticipate the spread of the swine flu to West Sumatra, the Teluk Bayur Harbor has been manually checking every immigrant and boat crew whose boat is being harbored there.
It is reported that about 30 percents of boats in Teluk Bayur are foreign boats. The Angkasa Pura II International Airport Minangkabau has been performing the same action.
At BIM, the checking is done using a thermo scanner.
