VIVAnews - The Jakarta Fire Department is installing a smart alarm system to speed up fire handling. The system, which is directly connected to fire department posts, is installed in 3,700 spots.
Head of People's Participation Sub Agency at Jakarta Fire Department, Sukendar, said that the smart alarm is automatic button which may send direct signal to any fire post. The button functions within a distance of 25 kilometers off a post. "Fire fighters will receive information faster and therefore they can fight the fire faster," he said on Thursday, Dec 18.
The smart button is installed in almost every neighborhood association in Jakarta. In addition to installing smart button, Jakarta Fire Department is also training 6,200 individuals from 124 groups of volunteer fire fighters.
Head of Jakarta Fire Department, Paimin Napitupulu, added that to maximize fire handling in Jakarta, the Jakarta administration is planning to purchase fire helicopters. "They will be used to fight fire from the air," said Paimin.
Jakarta has high frequency of fire incidents. Data from Jakarta Fire Department shows that there are at least 260 fire-prone areas in 53 urban villages. In 2008, there were 792 fire incidents claiming 14 lives and material losses of up to Rp 222 billion (US$20.25 million).
