VIVAnews - Aburizal Bakrie and Tempo will meet at the Press Council today. This would be the first time that the two parties meet after Aburizal filed a complaint against Tempo Magazine to the Press Council regarding the news article “Siapa Peduli Bakrie.”
“At this time, we have no tolerance at all. What we want has not changed since the beginning, and that is an apology. Because even if you (accidentally) step on someone’s foot you have to apologize,” said Bakrie’s attorney, Deni Kailimang to VIVAnews via telephone on Friday, Dec. 19.
The meeting between Bakrie and Tempo is scheduled to take place at the Press Council at around 2.00pm today.
Kailimang added that with regard to the actual complaint, the issues still remain the same. “Regarding the magazine cover, unbalanced reporting, and anonymous sources,” he said.
Tempo’s editor-in-chief, Toriq Hadad, said that the journalistic ethical standards have been implemented in the writing at issue. “There is no intention whatsoever to humiliate or giving a bad impression by choosing certain numbers to be placed at certain location,” said Hadad when called by the Press Council last Tuesday, Dec. 2.
Hadad said that the cover was only an illustration of the content of the main story in the magazine. According to Hadad, it was a design technique of using numbers to form Bakrie’s face. “The numbers 6 or 9 are used according to the available space,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Press Council was optimistic about the meeting. “This first meeting will hopefully be the last,” said chairman of the Press Council, Ichlasul Amal to VIVAnews via telephone, Friday, Dec. 19.
Ichlasul predicts that the process will run smoothly after he met with each party. “It looks like the process will run smoothly. We already have an indirect meeting with each party. Hopefully what they have done can be revealed at the Press Council. Then, it’s a matter of whether Tempo has done and will do, will accommodate Bakrie’s request,” said Ichlasul.
