Birth of East Sumatra State

VIVAnews - 61 years ago today, on 25 December 1947, the Dutch-sponsored East Sumatra State was founded.

Following the First Dutch Military Aggression against Indonesia on 21 July 1947, virtually all of the East Sumatra area of the Indonesian republic succumbed to the Dutch forces. A group of local people took advantage of the situation by proposing to the Dutch the creation of East Sumatra State. The Dutch, who was anxious to divide Indonesia into a number of smaller states, approved the proposal and created the Provisionary Council of East Sumatra. The Council was charged to formulate the future state foundation.

On 8 October 1947, East Sumatra was awarded a Special Territory status. Two months later, on 25 December 1947, the territory became the State of East Sumatra. Dr. Tengku Mansur, the former governor of East Sumatra, was elected as its first president (wali negara). On 27 December 1949, East Sumatra became a member of the United States of Indonesia (RIS) created by the Round Table Agreement.

After the United States of Indonesia was formally dissolved on 17 August 1950, East Sumatra once again became part of the Republic of Indonesia.
