2009 Elections

Pre-Elections Coalition Necessary

VIVAnews - Four political parties are discussiing the possibility to hold a coalition prior to the 2009 Elections. The said parties include United Development Party (PPP), Democratic Party, Functional Group (Golkar) Party and National Development Party (PKB).

Head of Central Assessment Council of PPP Bachtiar Chamsyah said that Indonesia requires a strong government with strong support by the parliament. According to him, people's support alone will not be enough to create a solid government.

"Without the support from the parliament, the government will be exhausted quickly. This means that one may win the presidential elections, but he/she will be worn out when facing DPR," said Chamsyah on Tuesday, Dec 30.

Chamsyah went on to say that this was why he set up a meeting for political parties to further discuss pre-elections coalition. "Post-elections partnership will lead to dishonesty and unfairness," he said.

Meanwhile, Secretary-General of Democratic Party Central Board Marzuki Ali said that the existing top political parties may not gain major votes in the 2009 Elections. "Coalition as a political capital is a must," said Ali. The Democratic Party is still seeking better coalition compared to the existing one.

He viewed that the coalition should not only aim at political image because it will not benefit the government's performance. "The current governmental coalition shows that if the governmental policy is populistic, than everyone is pleased. However, if the government's policy is not populistic, then most of the merged parties will be opportunistic,' he said.
