Indonesian Ambassador Visits Victims in Egypt
VIVAnews - As part of the government and the people of Indonesia’s solidarity and sympathy towards the suffering of the people of Palestine who have been targets Israeli’s military attacks in the past five days, the Indonesian Ambassador to Egypt A.M. Fachir and Mrs. Yasmin Fachir visited injured victims hospitalized at Nasser Hospital in Cairo on 31 December 2008.
In a press release received by VIVAnews, the Indonesian Ambassador received warm welcome and high appreciation from the Director of the Nasser Hospital, Dr Bahaa el-Din Abou Zeid. The Ambassador and his wife were also greeted with full compassion by the victims, most of whom suffered serious injuries.
Among the patients who knew that their visitors were from Indonesia, some could not hold back their tears. Ambassador Fachrir unhesitatingly embraced the patients warmly as an expression of deep sympathy.
The Indonesian Ambassador whispered to the patients that he represented the feelings, sympathy and solidarity of the entire Indonesian people towards the Palestinian people who are being tested by the God Almighty.
Ambassador Fachrir also tried to renew their spirit so that they remain steadfast. He also prayed for their speedy recovery. The patients expressed their gratitude for the attention, support and prayers from the people of Indonesia whom they have always considered as brethrens.
According to Dr. Bahaa, as of 31 December 2008, the number of Gaza victims treated at Nasser Hospital reached 27 people and will likely grow in the next few days. The hospital, which has 900 bed capacity, is being prepared to accommodate 100 Palestinian patients.
In general, patients have injuries resulting from bomb fragments, and others due to being struck by building debris. Dr. Bahaa added that of the 27 patients, some of them had to have their limb(s) amputated.
During a special meeting with Dr. Bahaa, the Indonesian Ambassador told him about the Indonesian government’s decision to give humanitarian aid in the amount of US$ 1 million, in addition to assistance in the form of medicines worth Rp 2 billion (US$183,000) from the Health Department.
Ambassador Fachir also indicated that there is a plan to send a medical team from Indonesia to help with medical services for Palestinian victims.
