2009 Elections

Abstaining Voters May Reach 50% in West Java

VIVAnews - The Elections Commission (KPU) of West Java considered that the number of abstaining voters in the coming legislative and presidential elections are estimated to reach more than 50 percent of the fixed voters' number reaching 29,040,008 people.

According to KPU Head of West Java Ferri Kurnia Rizyansyah, the condition will be booming in 2009 if the government cannot accommodate public needs.

"The tendency adapts the number of the abstaining voters during the regional elections," Rizyansyah told VIVAnews on Thursday, Jan 8.

Such external factor as global crisis, which may decrease people's purchasing power and cause massive layoffs, may affect the elections. In addition, people's will to come by polling stations will significantly drop.

"That may arouse sympathy from political community. If that is the situation, people may no longer think of democracy and care of who would be the leader," he said.

He expected that the government can instantly think about people's welfare. "Hopefully, the government may focus on the issue so that both the Indonesian economy and elections may succeed," he said.

If the government can handle the matter, said Rizyansyah, his party is optimistic that the voters' participation in West Java can reach around 80 percent.
