Japan Invaded Indonesia

VIVAnews – 66 years ago today, on 10 January 1942, Japan began its invasion of Indonesia (then, Netherlands Indies).

On 10 January 1942, a month after the Japanese deployed its invading forces to Southeast Asia, the Empire of Japan declared war on the Kingdom of Netherlands. On the same day, a huge Japanese invasion fleet made its way toward Tarakan.

Tarakan is a small Indonesian island in north-eastern Borneo. During World War II, the island was considered important since it had 700 oil wells, oil refinery, as well as an airfield.

Unable to hold back the invading force, the Dutch decided to burn all of its oil fields on the island. At the same time, the Japanese began to bomb several lightships on the shores of Tarakan.

At midnight, on 11 January 1942, the Japanese forces landed on the east coast of Tarakan. The island was completely blockaded by the Japanese forces. After some brief resistance, the Dutch garrison, who were outnumbered, surrendered to the Japanese on 12 January 1942.

All prisoners of war were subsequently put to death by the Japanese in retaliation for the destruction of the oil fields. The island of Tarakan remained under Japanese occupation until May 1945 when the island was liberated by Australian forces.
