International Film Festival

Indonesian Movies to Berlinale

VIVAnews - Two Indonesian movies Laskar Pelangi (Rainbow Warriors) and Pertaruhan (At Stake) will be screened in the 59th Berlin International Film Festival, the "Berlinale", which will be held from 5 to 15 February 2009. "At Stake", directed by five young directors, was selected for Panorama category.

According to Chief Programmer and Director of the Panorama category Wieland Speck, 21 movies were selected after he returned from trips to Asia, North and Latin America, as well as several European countries, where he screened and selected films. "At Stake" is included as one of the best documentaries that will be screened in this year's Berlinale.

"At Stake" is a true-story about four Indonesian women dealing with their own problems. Ucu Agustin directed "Ragat'e Anak"; Lucky Kuswandi "Nona Nyonya?"; Iwan Setyawan and M Ichsan "Untuk Apa?"; and Ami Ema Susanti "Mengusahakan Cinta".

For the Panorama category, as noted in www.berlinale.de, "At Stake" explores prevailing moral conceptions in the world’s most populous Islamic country: the topics range from female genital mutilation to the conflict that results when unmarried women wish to go to a gynaecologist.

"At Stake" will compete with "Rainbow Warriors", which is directed by Riri Reza, as part of the selected 21 other films. Both Indonesian movies will compete with the newest work of Brazilian director Jose Padilha entitled "Garapa". Padilha collected Berlin's Golden Bear for his movie "The Elite Squad", a violent tale of corrupt drug-squad officers in Brazil.
