“Today the charges would be read by the prosecutor,” said Director of Prosecution of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Ferry Wibisono, when contacted by VIVAnews in Jakarta, Monday, Feb. 2.

The case started when the government allocated Rp 26.5 billion (US$1.34 million) for the project to help victims of tsunami in West Java in 2006. The aid was to be given to the fishermen in four regencies in West Java.

The aid was in the form of nets, boats and rumpons (structures used as a fish-aggregating device (FAD)). PT Buntalan, owned by Wiranata, won the bid to execute the project.

However, after the aid was distributed, fishermen from Ciamis, one of the regencies, complained that the boats that were given to them broke apart easily. KPK estimates that the loss to the state is up to Rp 8.1 billion (US$ 714,089).

Wiranata is being charged under articles 2 and 3 of the Law on Corruption Eradication, for which the maximum punishment is life imprisonment.
