2009 Elections Survey

Extent and Strength of Support for Candidates

VIVAnews - The nation-wide survey was conducted by Reform Institute in the months of November and December 2008. The sample size was 2500 with confidence level of 95 percent. The sample was selected based on gender proportion and provincial population proportion.

The public is more positive in its view of the leadership under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) and Vice President Jusuf Kalla (JK). At least 75 percent of the respondents indicated that they favor the SBY-JK leadership. Only 22.68 percent stated dislike, whereas 1.84 percent did not respond.

The presidential candidate with the highest level of electability is Yudhoyono. In three months, the political community’s support increased from 19 percent in July 2008 to 42 percent.

Meanwhile, political support for Megawati fell from 19.4 percent to 16.67 percent during the same period.

The electability of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X increased from 7 percent to 10 percent. Support for Prabowo increased from 3.8 percent to 7.88 percent. Support for Wiranto, in fifth position, increased from 3.05 percent to 4.33 percent.

Only 39.70 percent of the respondents indicated that they are fixed in the decision they have made on which presidential candidate they will vote for. Meanwhile, 57.82 percent said they may still change their minds. The results differ slightly for choice of political parties. 49.22 percent stated that they have made up their minds on which party, while 50.11 states that they could still change their minds.

Another interesting finding in the survey is that the impact of vice presidential candidates on respondents’ choice of presidential candidates is not as high as expected. Only 48 percent indicated they might change their minds based on the choice of running mate of their presidential candidate of choice.
