Indonesia Outdid European Countries

VIVAnews - Indonesia gained supports from international community as regards Human Rights upholding although it was alleged as a country that committed violations on Human Rights in the past. Indonesia was approved as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for 2007 to 2010.

"At the international level, Indonesia is supported by many countries despite the fact that Human Rights enforcement in Indonesia is quite terrible," said Director General of Human Rights and Humanity at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Wiwiek Setyawati Firman, on Monday, Feb. 9.

Indonesia was backed by 182 out of 193 member countries of the United Nations to become a member of Human Rights Council for 2006 and 2010. The UN Human Rights Council was founded on 15 March 2006 to replace the UN Human Rights Commission.

Indonesia gained the second largest  number of votes behind India, which obtained 185 votes. "The difference with India was only three votes," said Setyawati Firman.

In fact, India and Indonesia outdid more progressed European countries. For instance, the Netherlands acquired 122 votes while Italy was voted by 110 countries. "Total votes for the Netherlands and Italy were far behind total votes for Indonesia and India," she said.

By becoming one of 47 members of the Human Rights Council, Indonesia has the chance to explain its government's position in upholding Human Rights. Indonesia can also set forth Human Rights issues before the forums of Human Rights Council.

Membership in Human Rights Council applies for a duration of between one and three years, depending on the drawing. "Previously, when 182 countries supported Indonesia, it had only attained a one-year membership. Now, Indonesia has a three-year membership which will end by 2010," she said.
