VIVAnews - Before it is called Jakarta Biennale, this event was introduced as the Indonesia Painting Grand Exhibition and it was first held in 1968.
The Biennale express artists' responsibility towards the society and seeks to improve people's appreciation towards art.
Jakarta Biennale is organized by The Jakarta Art Council and The Governor of Jakarta as the patron. 2009 is the year that marks the first time Jakarta Biennale invites artists from abroad.
Jakarta Biennale 2009 is trying to use art as a strategy for creating a change involving urban issues. The organizers expect that this event will be able to open new inspirative, participative, and tolerant spaces by collaborating reflective, critical and creative ideas together.
This event is divided into three zones, zona pemahaman (zone of understanding), zona pertarungan (battle zone) and zona cair (fluid zone). There are various events and exhibition in these three zones.
