A Former Ambassador Passed Away

VIVAnews - 3 years ago, today, on 16 February 2006, Lieutenant General Adnil Hasnan Habib, former Indonesian ambassador to Thailand and the United States, passed away.

Hasnan Habib was born in Maninjau, West Sumatra, 3 December 1927, into an intellectual family. His father was a school supervisor and novelist, while his mother worked as a teacher.

Habib started his military career by joining a native auxiliary force set up by the Japanese. Later, he was admitted to Gyugun, a Japanese military school in Padang.

After Indonesia's independence, Habib went to the military academy in Yogyakarta. Later, in 1952, he attended the Infantry Company Officer Course at Fort Benning, United States.

Upon his graduation from the academy, Habib became a lecturer at then newly founded Infantry School in Bandung. At the same time, he attended University of Parahiyangan, and graduated in 1957 with a degree in economics.

From 1962 to 1964, the father of four, who was married to Naida Zastia, went to Yugoslavia and studied at the Higher Military Academy and War College in Beograd. Seven years later, in 1971, he continued his study at Naval Post Graduate School in Monterrey, California.

Due to his intellectual capacity, Habib spent most of his military career as army strategic planner and educator. During his career, Habib, also a former advisor to the Minister of Research and Technology, held various positions, including Assistant of General Planning at the Department of Defense, Chief of Staff for the Department of Defense, and member of the People's Representative Council (MPR) representing ABRI (the Indonesian armed forces) from 1973 to 1978.

After retiring from the army, the former IMF Executive Director for Southeast Asia, Fiji, and Nepal became widely known as an expert in Indonesian military. Not infrequently, he was invited to speak about the Indonesian military at the media, seminar, and university.

In 1982, Habib was appointed as the Indonesian ambassador to the United States, a position he held until 1985.

Seven years later, in 1992, the former Indonesian ambassador to Thailand was appointed as the Non-Alignment Movement ambassador to the North America, Caribbean, and South America.

Habib is considered by many as one of the most enlightened generals of Indonesia. The former permanent representative of Indonesia to the UNESCAP played a major role in the military integration, consolidation, and reorganization in Indonesia.

Hasnan Habib passed away in Jakarta on 16 February 2006, at 78. He was buried the next day in Kalibata Heroes Cemetery Park.
