VIVAnews - Kung Fu Dancing & Entre-deux is a contemporary dance performance by Li Yuang Shang and Compagnie Eolipile. The event is sponsored by Centre Culturel Francais (CCF).
Why does it seem much easier to watch a kung fu film than contemporary dance? This question inspires Lin Yuang Shang to create a contemporary choreography based on kung fu. Kung fu comes from the Tao, founded by Lao Tse in 500 BC. Tao enriches martial arts practice, which accompanies energy exploration. Previously, Kung Fu Dancing was a commission from the theater Le Bateau Feu for artistic creation and teaching aid. This dance is performed by Lin Yuang Shang himself.
Entre Deux (“in-between”), presents Western female dancer Caroline Desmaison who is going to interpret the work of Asian choreographer Lin Yuang Shang. This dance is based on a research about horizontality-verticality, and Yi King philosophy about the eternal flux of the present. Within the labyrinth of life, the dancer moves in between two states: self-renouncement and obstinacy, fall and vertigo, between wild ecstasy and fighting. Like a soul or memory, she seems to belong to the past, present, and the future at the same time.

The group Eolipile was founded in 1996 by choreographer Lin Yuan Shang. Born in Taipei, Lin Yuan Shang joined the Opera of Beijing at the age of 11, specialzing in acrobatics and warrior roles.
He felt that the moves were too rigid and so he decided to explore other forms of expressions - contemporary dance and theater. In France, he met Ariane Mnouchkine and collaborated with her from 1986 to 1988. He returned to France in 1994 to elaborate his knowledge of contemporary dance with Maguy Marin, then founded the group Eolipile.
Each performance is composed of two solos. The first one, Kung Fu Dancing, was created in 2008. The second, Entre-deux, is Lin Yuan Shang's latest creation as a choreographer. He has chosen to work with a French dancer, Caroline Desmaison.
