Diplomatic Notes for Overseas Elections

VIVAnews - The Department of Foreign Affairs instructed heads of Indonesian representatives abroad to send diplomatic notes to inform the respective countries about the Indonesian Elections.

Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirajuda said Indonesian citizens abroad have low participation in the Elections due to administrativeissues as well as difficulties in leaving their offices early. However, Singapore, for example, facilitates Indonesian citizens to vote.

The Department of Foreign Affairs intendds to improve voters' participation. Therefore, "The Department of Foreign Affairs has instructed the heads of Indonesian Representatives abroad to exercise their rights to vote in the 2009 Elections," said Wirajuda on Monday, Feb 16.

According to Wirajuda, the Elections will take place in the Indonesian representative offices abroad. "Even in a country as democratic as Switzerland, postal voting is not permitted," he said.

Spreading awareness about the upcoming elections for Indonesian citizens abroad has been carried out in several cities in the world having quite a high number of voters such as Kuala Lumpur, Cairo, Jeddah, New Delhi, New York, Kinabalu and Kuching.
