VIVAnews - 50 years of exploration in Sumatra helped PT Chevron Pacific Indonesia produce 11 billion barrels of crude oil. However, it does not result in a significant impact in local economy.
The success of having produced oil of 11 billion barrels commemorated by Chevron in Minas Exploration Area, Siak Regency, and was attended by Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro, Governor of Riau, Head of Upstream Oil and Gas Regulator and Director of Indo Asia Bisnis Chevron.
"Producing 11 billion barrels of oil has been a great achievement in oil production in Indonesia as well as a great completion for Chevron's 85 years of exploration in the country. [Oil] fields in Sumatra have produced 11 billion barrels for 50 years. This is the first achievement for Chevron's operation accross the world," said Chevron Managing Director Steve Green in Riau on Tuesday, Feb 17.
He stated that oil fields in Sumatra have contributed 50 percent of national crude oil production whose largest field is situated in Bengkalis Regency.
Riau Economic observer, Alvian D, mentioned that the presence of oil companies especially in Riau has not affected local people economically. The population in Riau was indeed economically boosted by the presence of logging companies, oil palm and rubber plantation in the 1980s. In addition, non-oil and gas companies also provided a large number of employment.
"If oil and gas companies indeed brought a good impact on the economy for local inhabitants, it should have affected Riau inhabitants 30 years ago. However, statistical data showed that Riau was categorized the second most disadvantaged province in Indonesia in the 1980s. In fact, oil production in Riau at that era reached its peak," he said.
