ASEAN Should Prevent Protectionism

VIVAnews - Southeast Asian leaders will try to deliver a message at a summit next week against the use of protectionism to cope with the global financial crisis.

"What I hope the ASEAN countries would do at our meeting next week is to send a powerful message to the rest of the world that despite the global financial crisis, we will not be tempted to resort to any kind of protectionism," Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Saturday, Feb 21, told reporters during a visit to Jakarta.

According to Vejjajiva, in dealing with the global financial crisis, it is believed that protectionism will not solve the problem. It will instead put presure on the crisis leading to a multidimensional crisis.

Abhisit suggested that the ASEAN countries have a firm commitment to non-protectionism policies. In addition, he also said that each region should improve commitment for a program to further liberalization of trade and investment.

Furthermore, the Thai Prime Minister also hinted that the presence of Thailand and Indonesia in the coming G-20 Summit in London, Britain, will imply to the forum that the financial crisis does not only affect developed countries but also emerging countries.
