Journalist Association Condemns Violent Act

VIVAnews - The Alliance of Indonesian Journalists (AJI) of Jakarta condemned Chief Corporal Suhermawan who had beaten and hampered journalists of TVOne and MetroTV while they were on duty. The act was deemed a crime and in violation of Law on Press No.40/1999.

In addition, Wahyu Dhyatmika Aditya Wardhana, Head of AJI of Jakarta said on Wednesday, Feb. 25, he demanded that chief of Military Police Detachment of Indonesian Military to investigate Suhermawan and charge the officer with legal sanction.

The Alliance also urged that every party encourage and respect press freedom. Meanwhile any violation against journalistic ethics should be reported to the Press Council.

The beating, said Wardhana, signaled that violent acts against journalists carrying out journalistic duties are still going on. The incident occurred in Pisangan, East Jakarta, on Monday, Feb 23. The acts of violence took place as a number of journalists were covering a fire which burnt a home.
