RI-S.Korea Sign US$6 Billion Agreement

VIVAnews – Indonesian and South Korean business leaders and officials signed eight commercial agreements worth US$6 billion on Saturday, 7 March 2009.

“[The agreement] includes six major projects,” said Head of Indonesia’s Capital Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), M Lutfi, at the ‘Indonesia-Korea CEO Business Dialogue’ held at Ritz Carlton Hotel, Jakarta, on Saturday, March 7, which was attended by 80 Korean and 100 Indonesian businessmen.

The eight commercial and government projects attached in the agreement include:
1.Korea Energy Management Corporation and Jakarta Provincial Government

2.PT Pertamina and Korea Gas Corporation

3.Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and Korea Institute of Industrial Technology for the study and the development of marine biotechnology and environment.

4.Korea Energy Management Corporation and Gorontalo Provincial Government

5.Korea Export Insurance Corporation and PT Asuransi Ekspor Indonesia

6.Korea Midland Power Orient F A Machinary Samsung C&T Corporation and PT Medcopapua Industri Lestari for Eco-friendly Biomass Power Project in Merauke

7.Korea Midland Power Co. Ltd., Riau Provincial Government, and Euro CAP Corporation for Riau Rokan Hilir Power Project in Pendadaran Island for new city and tourism

8.Korea Midland Power Co. Ltd, Riau Provincial Government, and Euro CAP Corporation for Riau Indragiri Hulu Mine-Mouth Power Project.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Trade Minister, Mari Elka Pangestu, said during the opening session of the dialogue that Indonesia and South Korea have a chance to drive the economy. “As we all know, Korea is Indonesia’s sixth largest investor in 2008,” Pangestu said.

In 2008, Korea has 182 projects in Indonesia worth US$ 301.1 million, mostly in chemical, pharmacy, and other sectors.

“Korean companies contribute significantly to Indonesia’s export,” she said. Therefore, Pangestu expected to continue the cooperation between Indonesia and South Korea.
