VIVAnews - The government decided not to import sugar. The domestic production is still enough for domestic needs and total stock is around 480-500,000 tons which will be adequate for two months.
Deputy Coordinating Minister for the Economy on Agriculture and Maritime Affairs, Bayu Krishnamurti, said sugar import is not necessary. "Import will be done if it's really necessary," said Krishnamurti at the Finance Department on Tuesday, March 10.
In addition, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu also said that, "[The government] has decided not to import [sugar]."
Krishnamurti said in next April sugar farmers will start the grinding period. It is expected that the period will bring sugar price back to normal.
"Sugar price rise in the country between January and March is around 10 percent based on the monitoring of 65 cities . It is affected by the international price," he said.
