Shopping Center's Tenant Number Rises in 2009

VIVAnews - The shopping center management predicted that mall tenants will increase in 2009. The predicted rise is around 20 up to 30 percent.

The chairperson of the Indonesia Shopping Center Association Stefanus Ridwan said that the diversion of exports into domestic products creates the penetration of new-brand products or older foreign brand, which is produced in Indonesia, to malls and shopping center. Therefore, it triggers new tenants in the mall.

"Products like fashion, shoes, housewares, and furniture with Indonesian brand or international brand customised in the country are sold a lot in the mall. Domestic product is considered excellent," he stated as interviewed by VIVAnews on Friday, March 13.

Besides the exports diversion, the other reason for the rise on tenant number is the number of workers who experienced layoff and later posses a business in malls.

"It's the same thing that happened in 1997-1998 [economic crisis]. There were a lot of small kiosks turned big," said he.

Although the growth is not as high as last year 25 percent growth rate, but Ridwan predicted that retail sector, especially in malls and shopping center will still continue to expand until 15 percent. He thought that the use of malls has evolved not only as a shopping place, but also as lifestyle and recreational place. "Indonesian people are consumptive, malls will not grow out of [costumers]."
