The Asia-Europe Meeting

Germany Needs Workers on Agriculture

VIVAnews - Germany and Indonesia will start cooperating in plantation and agriculture investments, mostly on labor force fulfillment, according to Minister of Manpower and Transmigration, Erman Suparno, during a meeting with German Minister of Work and Social Issues Olaf Scholz at Postdam, Germany, on Monday, March 16.

"Germany is incessantly opening green job [opportunity] or plantation- and agriculture-related work," he said in a press release.

He explained further that there is a relatively high necessity for labor force in wheat and wood sector in Germany because the demand on those commodities is increasing.

"Germans prefer to employ skilled Indonesian migrant workers because they are competent, discipline, and have less problems although Germany is suffering quite a decrease in its industry," he said.

Moreover, the bilateral meeting between the two ministers also agreed on opening an internship program for workers through employer association in both countries to transfer technology and information.

"The internship program is easy to materialize because the criteria is clear and the interns' data will be well-recorded, and the interns will receive fee and accommodation while doing their internship," Suparno added.

As a follow-up, employer associations in both countries will soon hold a meeting to discuss and determine which sectors that can be used for internship program.

The bilateral meeting was held at the interval of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) taking place on March 16-22 in Postdam, Germany.
