Indonesian Waters Prone to Infiltration

VIVAnews - Chief of the Indonesian Military General Djoko Santoso stated that the vast and open area of Indonesian waters are potential to be infiltrated by foreign forces.

"Indonesia has open coastal lines of 81 millions km in length. Therefore, it is prone to be infiltrated from any direction," he said in Banda Aceh on Thursday, March 19.

He explained that there are nine strategic water spots in the world. Four of them are located in Indonesian waters, namely Malaka Strait, Sunda Strait in western part of Indonesia, and Lombok and Omewetar Strait in eastern part of Indonesia.

Each is prone to threats. For example, Malaka Strait is the sea with the highest traffic in the world which has become the crossing area for about 140 ships per day. Out of 140 ships, 50 percent of them carry world's oil.

"Therefore, [the area] needs adequate main weapon system to maintain the state's sovereignty and security [which] includes maritime force elements," he explained.

Gen. Santoso stated that the addition of battleships to the Indonesian Military especially in the Indonesian Navy, is one of the government's commitments to protect the state sovereignty.

Therefore, as long as the fund is available, the Indonesian Military will continue adding the main devices for weapon system. The Indonesian navy plans to add one Korvet in the near future, which will be Frans Kaisiepo ship, and submarine.

Santoso stressed that the military will maximize all available fleets to secure and protect the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia's sovereignty.
