VIVAnews - Democracy is identical to Indonesian society, but the finding made by the The National Commission on Violence Against Women (KOMNAS Perempuan) showed that there are discriminative regional regulations that are against democracy.
According to Head of KOMNAS Perempuan, Kemala Chandrakirana, there have been 154 discriminative regional policies issued in the past ten years. The conclusion is resulted from a research conducted in December 2008 to January 2009 in 69 regencies/cities in 21 Indonesian provinces.
"As many as 64 out of those 154 discriminative regional policies are forms of direct discrimination against women," said Chandrakirana during a national forum entitled "The Constitutional Tasks of New Leadership: Free Indonesia from Discrimination" at the Constitutional Court in Jakarta on Monday, March 23.
According to Chandrakirana, the observation showed that the discrimination is taking the form of the limitation of expression through 21 policies which regulate ways for dressing. "There is also degradation in legal protection and assurance because [the policies] criminalize women through 38 policies on prostitution eradication," she said.
There are also four policies on migrant workers which abandon decent livelihood and jobs.
Instead of protecting the society, Chandrakirana viewed that the said policies create a situation where state agencies have in fact become the initiators as well as agents of discriminative action against the citizens. "Those matters are in fact institutionalization of discrimination," she explained.
