RI Aims at Higher Number of Chinese Tourists

VIVAnews - The Culture and Tourism Department is targeting on adding the number of Chinese tourists to 420,000 people in 2009. In 2007, the number of Chinese tourist reached 332,000 people.

The director for Promotional Facility of the Culture and Tourism Department Esthy Reko Astuti said that the growth in the number of Chinese tourist reached 32.6 percent than in 2007.

"China is one of the ten main targets for Indonesia's tourism market," she said after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to prolong the "Visit Indonesia" promotion between the Culture and Tourism Department and PT ICBC Indonesia at TCT building, Jakarta on Friday, April 3.

The Chinese tourists potential is still open for around 84 million people, coming from three major cities. The country's economy is still positively growing in 2009 and relatively unaffected by the global crisis.

The bilateral cooperation is supported by Indonesia's national airline, travel agents, and ICBC's promotion in China. In 2007, the number of foreign visitors reached 6.4 million people and the government is targeting on 6.5 million people in 2009.

The president director PT Bank ICBC Indonesia Yuan Bin said that their second signing with the Indonesian government is an effort to strengthen the tourism, economy, and culture. "Our hope [it] will increase the number of visitors in Indonesia and expand the bilateral relation," he said.
