WNI Must Be Cautious of Riots in Thailand

VIVAnews - The Foreign Affairs Department urged all Indonesian citizens (WNI) in Thailand to be aware and careful considering the ongoing political conflict in the country. It was stated by the director for Protection of Indonesian Citizens and Business Entities Teguh Wardoyo when being interviewed by VIVAnews on Monday, April 13.

"We don't forbid [Indonesian] citizens who want to travel to [Thailand], but we inform them to be aware and careful," Wardoyo said. Meanwhile, Indonesians living in Thailand are safe. 

"They [the protesters] don't attack foreigners, but aim at Abhisit Vejjajiva's government," he further explained. The suggestion to be alert is also covered in the Indonesian Embassy's Website.

The data shows that there are around 526 Indonesians in Bangkok and its surroundings. While Indonesians who are included in the Indonesia Consulate General in Songkhla (a city in the southern of Bangkok) working area covers 242 people.

Meanwhile, Singapore, UK, Canada, Australia, and Russia have issued a travel advisory for their citizens who wanted to visit Thailand after the Prime Minister Vejjajiva issued an emergency situation on last Sunday.

Citizens from those five countries have been asked to cancel their plans to visit Thailand if they do not have any insurgency. The people in Thailand have also been told to be cautious and avoid riot spots.

Until Monday, April 13, the clash between the supporters of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra with the anti-riot police in Bangkok has been running since early in the day injuring 70 people. The clash happened at the Din Daeng intersection, Bangkok, near the Victory Monument. The protesters had also burned down police stations at Nang Lerng intersection.
