Govt Cannot Intervene Freeport Layoff

VIVAnews – The government had affirmed that they could not be able to intervene the layoff decision on 64 employees of PT Freeport Indonesia.

“The manpower department cannot intervene,” said a director on industrial issue at the department of manpower Gandi Sugandi through telephone in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 14.

The company had started the process to receive employee layoff permit at the Industrial Relation Court. “So, we [the department] can only monitor the process in the court,” he said. The manpower department deals only with mediation process.

“Therefore, [the company] doesn't require a permit from the manpower department to lay off [their employees], but it needs a decision from the Industrial Relation Court to be able to do it,” he explained.

Nevertheless, the manpower department stated that they will be ready if the court needs an expert witness for the trial. “People who will attend [the trial] is based on demand by the disputing parties. It will be done according to the procedure,” he added.
