Golkar at the Crossroads

VIVAnews - There is strong indication that the Functional Group (Golkar) Party will be hand in hand with the Democratic Party once again. Golkar is convinced that the Democratic Party is still in need of Golkar.

"If we (Golkar) fall back, Yudhoyono and the Islamic parties can make it," said a functionary of the Central Board of Golkar Party, Fahmi Idris, on Tuesday, April 14.

The final decision on the future coalition between both parties is not yet made. Golkar Chairman Jusuf Kalla and Democratic Party's Head of Board of Trustees Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono are still under negotiation. Latest report said that Kalla visited Yudhoyono on Monday night, April 13.

When asked about the possibility of being refused by the Democratic Party due to weak Golkar's position, Idris replied, "Who says that we are weak. The percentage [of the ballot counting] cannot be the measure."

Idris then cited the result of the 1999 Elections resulting in the election of Abdurrahman Wahid from the National Awakening Party (PKB) as the Indonesian President. In fact, at that time, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) had far more votes than PKB.

The quick count result of the parliamentary Elections sent the Democratic Party atop the list with 20 percent of votes. In addition, Golkar only reached 14 percent.

The situation forces Golkar to make coalition with the Democratic Party, despite its intention of annulling the coalition earlier. Meanwhile, the Justice and Prosperous Party (PKS) will be out of the coalition if Golkar stays.
